Israeli Lawmaker Highlights Arab Education Inciting Hatred and Violence Against Jews

During a recent visit to Arab schools in Israel, Knesset Education Committee Chairman Tzvi Sukkot received a striking phone call from a Bedouin inmate serving time for murdering his father's wife. The prisoner credited Sukkot for his efforts to reform education in the Arab sector and revealed that his violent behavior stemmed from the hateful messages he absorbed in school. He described being taught by teachers from northern Israel and the West Bank who promoted hatred of the state and Jews, claiming that Jews came to take Arab lands. The inmate said he was raised to believe that harming a Jew would earn sympathy, while harming an Arab would bring hatred, reflecting a deep-seated nationalist indoctrination.

He further explained that criminality in the Arab community is rooted in nationalist ideology taught in schools, where Jews are dehumanized and the legitimacy of the state is denied. He warned that even if he is released, his children will likely follow the same path unless education changes. Sukkot emphasized that this testimony demonstrates the urgent need to address the root causes of crime and terrorism through education reform, not just policing. He stated, "Whoever thinks crime can be fought only by police and enforcement lives in a misconception and should wake up before it is too late."

Sukkot vowed that his committee will continue exposing incitement in the education system and ensure schools promote coexistence, respect for law, and loyalty to the state. He declared that any institution unwilling to abandon incitement will not receive government funding. This incident occurred amid ongoing efforts to monitor curricula and combat incitement and violence in the Arab education system in Israel.
