Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's associates told opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot that unity government talks depend on the opposition dropping its bid to replace the Knesset speaker. The Likud party reiterated that negotiations will not occur if this effort persists. Eisenkot's party rejected the condition and is not considering a joint government with Netanyahu. The opposition remains divided on who to nominate for Knesset speaker, with Yashar and Yisrael Beiteinu parties disagreeing on the candidate. Discussions are ongoing within the Israeli political system ahead of coalition negotiations. Associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have informed Gadi Eisenkot, head of the Yashar party, that unity government talks are contingent on the opposition abandoning its bid to replace the Knesset speaker. The Likud party stated that negotiations will not proceed as long as these efforts continue, specifically directing this message to Yashar rather than its opposition partners. Likud expressed openness to forming a national unity government if Yashar agrees to this condition. However, sources close to Eisenkot indicated that the push to change the Knesset speaker will continue, and working with Netanyahu in a joint government is not being considered. Meanwhile, internal opposition discussions are underway regarding their candidate for Knesset speaker. Yashar insists the position should go to a representative from their party, while Yisrael Beiteinu demands that MK Oded Forer be their candidate. Leaders of the opposition bloc are continuing their meetings. Avigdor Lieberman met with Eisenkot recently but declined to commit to recommending him for prime minister. Currently, the Bayahad and United List parties have announced they will recommend Eisenkot as prime minister.
