Roni Gorfunkel, the Chairman of the Workers' Committee at Bank Hapoalim, announced his resignation from the position on Sunday, following an internal revolt by committee members. Gorfunkel, who has held the post since July 2019, stated in a letter to bank employees that he decided to step down after more than seven years due to "recent events" that led him to conclude he could no longer lead the workers' organization according to his principles.
The resignation comes after months of internal disputes and friction within the committee, against the backdrop of an ongoing conflict Gorfunkel was managing on behalf of the employees with the bank's management. This conflict stemmed from a streamlining plan announced by Bank Hapoalim in December 2024, shortly after Yadin Antabi was appointed CEO.
In September 2025, the Workers' Committee, backed by the Histadrut labor federation, declared a labor dispute. Subsequently, the committee engaged in repeated sanctions and even a brief partial work stoppage. Recently, a dispute erupted within the committee itself, with a faction of the National Council members demanding a discussion on Gorfunkel's ouster, alleging his failure to effectively manage the protracted conflict with the bank's management.
