Israeli Universities Expand Support for Military Reservists and Career Soldiers

Israeli higher education institutions are set to enhance support for reservists and career military personnel starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. The military unveiled a program on Sunday designed to assist students whose studies have been disrupted by extended service periods, building upon measures implemented in the previous two academic years. A key development is the widespread adoption of alternative assessments across all programs. Students may be allowed to submit written assignments instead of taking exams, undergo adapted tests, or retain the higher of two exam scores, depending on the circumstances. The number of courses eligible for these accommodations varies with service duration. High-ranking reservists and frontline career soldiers can receive support for up to three courses, with the option to submit papers in lieu of attending classes. Those in similar roles but not on the front lines will be limited to two courses. Students serving at least 21 days per semester in the second tier of service may use the provisions for one or two courses, based on their mission type. Students forced to extend their studies by a semester or year due to service will maintain their existing accommodations to ensure graduation. Merit scholarships will also become more accessible, requiring military personnel to complete 10% fewer credits than other students to qualify for dean's and rector's honors. For master's and doctoral candidates, universities will offer case-by-case solutions for researchers facing project delays, including extended deadlines, flexible funding disbursement schedules, and personalized guidance. Course recordings will remain available for three months post-semester to help students catch up. The plan also includes individual tutoring for missed material, exam deferrals, and the ability to accumulate maximum credits. Notably, the support system is being extended to spouses of career soldiers and frontline reservists with children under 13, who will receive similar benefits.
