Maccabi Tel Aviv Coach Admits Near Miss on Hayes Signing

Maccabi Tel Aviv is preparing for a crucial derby against Hapoel Tel Aviv amidst a difficult period, having suffered two consecutive EuroLeague losses. Coach Oded Katash acknowledged the team's struggles, citing both professional and mental challenges stemming from recent defeats. He noted the condensed schedule, including playing abroad, exacerbates these issues.

Katash expressed disappointment with the team's season start, stating they could have secured at least two more wins even with existing limitations. He believes playing at home might have contributed to some losses, but ultimately stressed the need for improved performance and quality. The coach accepted criticism, recognizing his responsibility along with the staff.

The mental aspect of the team's performance is a combination of objective factors like player shortages and an unbalanced roster, particularly in the guard positions, which puts significant strain on players. Katash clarified that the recent loss to Paris was not due to a lack of commitment or desire, and mentioned Lundberg's injury as a contributing factor.

Regarding potential reinforcements, Katash revealed that the team was very close to signing Killian Hayes, agreeing to all his terms, but the deal ultimately fell through. He expressed hope for a swift signing to address the team's needs, especially in the guard positions. Katash also stated that Teyss's exclusion from the last game was a professional decision, not personal.

Player Jaylen Hoard added that the team is analyzing mistakes and preparing for the intense derby. He acknowledged the season hasn't met expectations but urged positivity and improvement. Hoard also commented on teammate Yam Madar, stating Madar is eager to play well and secure a win against Hapoel, as they did in the preseason.
