Israeli defense companies are aggressively entering the growing global market for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), also known as unmanned submarines. Elbit Systems announced it will showcase its new capabilities in this field at the Euronaval 2026 exhibition in Paris, following its acquisition of Canadian firm ISE. These UUVs are designed for intelligence gathering, mine detection, anti-submarine warfare, and protecting strategic maritime infrastructure.
Elbit's acquisition of ISE, a Vancouver-based company with over 50 years of experience in underwater robotics, positions it to compete in a burgeoning sector driven by naval demand for autonomous systems. ISE has supplied over 250 underwater vehicles to more than 20 countries. Elbit plans to integrate these new UUVs with its existing "Seagull" family of unmanned surface vessels, enabling coordinated operations and data sharing between surface and subsurface platforms.
Oren Sebbag, CEO of Elbit Systems' Intelligence and Electronic Warfare Division, stated that navies worldwide are increasingly seeking comprehensive autonomous solutions for complex maritime missions. He added that the addition of UUVs allows Elbit to offer an integrated system covering both surface and underwater operations.
Elbit is not alone in this race. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has already developed the "Blue Whale" unmanned submarine, which was delivered in February to the German Navy in a deal estimated at tens of millions of dollars. This marked the first autonomous underwater vehicle acquired by the German Navy. Greece is also reportedly considering leasing three such submarines from IAI to bolster its maritime capabilities against Turkey.
The demand for UUVs is fueled by concerns over threats to underwater cables, gas pipelines, and energy infrastructure, as well as their utility in mine detection and surveillance without risking human crews. Recent events, including the US Navy's operations in the Strait of Hormuz and the US military's destruction of a Houthi UUV, highlight the increasing importance and proliferation of these technologies.
