Ultra-Orthodox Protest Blocks Israel's Busiest Interchange During Rush Hour

Ultra-Orthodox protesters blocked the Geha Interchange and Highway 4 near Bnei Brak on Thursday during peak traffic hours, causing severe disruptions. The demonstrators, identified as followers of Rabbi Tzvi Friedman from the Jerusalem Faction, also blocked train tracks in the Petah Tikva area. The protest was triggered by the arrest of Alon Smadja, a draft evader from Jerusalem who was apprehended by military police after failing to report for service. Smadja was arrested during a surprise operation outside his home. Police stated the incident would lead to significant traffic congestion in multiple central locations in the Gush Dan region, affecting hundreds of thousands of drivers and public transport users. Police forces were deployed to maintain order and direct traffic, aiming to minimize the impact on residents' daily routines. Authorities advised drivers to avoid the protest areas, use alternative routes, navigation apps, and stay updated on traffic reports. Public transportation, including bus lines along Jabotinsky Road and near Highway 4, was also expected to experience delays.
