Movement for Quality of Government Demands Probe into Shin Bet Chief Over Election Interference Claims

The Movement for Quality of Government has petitioned Israel's Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, and Deputy Attorney General Gil Limon, demanding a criminal investigation into Shin Bet chief David Zini and other service officials. The group alleges that the Shin Bet possessed intelligence regarding alleged foreign interference in the 26th Knesset elections, known as "Ra'amgate," prior to election day but failed to transfer it to the Central Elections Committee chairman or act to thwart the interference.

The demand comes amid ongoing Shin Bet investigations into the election interference allegations, which surfaced following reports of vote-buying in the Arab community and foreign funding aimed at influencing election results. The movement argues that if the Shin Bet had such information, it should have been used to prevent the alleged interference, and questions why Zini stated on election day that the process was being "monitored and conducted properly and inspiringly."

Eliad Shraga, chairman of the Movement for Quality of Government, stated that while foreign interference requires a thorough investigation, it is equally crucial to examine the actions of the agency responsible for preventing it. He emphasized the public's right to know why intelligence was not used or shared if it existed before the elections, and stressed that safeguarding election integrity necessitates a full review of decision-makers' accountability.

This development occurs as the Central Elections Committee clarified that the 26th Knesset elections were conducted lawfully and that there is no basis for claims of systematic damage to election integrity. However, the committee also stated that sensitive classified information presented to Chairman Noam Sohlberg did raise suspicions requiring further examination, prompting the committee to deepen its review. The committee's statement did not specify when the Shin Bet received the information, what Zini knew beforehand, or what actions were taken.

Ra'am chairman Mansour Abbas has denied any party involvement in the affair and pledged cooperation with authorities, while the Likud party has called for a comprehensive investigation. The Movement for Quality of Government's petition is currently based on published reports and questions about the Shin Bet's conduct, not on definitive proof of intentional concealment or criminal wrongdoing by the service.
