Popular Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress is set to launch a local marketplace in Israel, allowing registered Israeli businesses to establish stores and sell directly to consumers within the country. This significant move, coinciding with the upcoming Singles' Day sales event, will enable faster delivery times for products shipped from within Israel. The initiative also includes the launch of an Elite customer club for Israelis.
Starting November 1, products designated as "ship from Israel" will appear on the AliExpress website and app. Among the initial offerings will be Jaggar bicycles and Xiaomi products, such as smart desk lamps, robotic vacuums, hair clippers, portable speakers, security cameras, headphones, smartphones, electric toilet seats, air fryers, electric scooters, and electric bicycles. Yeniv Porat, manager of Alibuy, indicated that while prices are not yet finalized, they are expected to be competitive, citing Jaggar bicycles potentially selling for around 4,500 shekels compared to the usual domestic price of 6,000 shekels or more. This means Israeli sellers will need to compete with Chinese pricing.
AliExpress stated that the expansion aims to broaden the range of products and brands available to Israeli consumers and leverage its existing infrastructure for payments, logistics, marketing, and customer service. Initially, the seller onboarding process will focus on categories like home appliances, electronics, automotive electronics, office supplies, mother and baby products, and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). Sellers must meet AliExpress's quality and service standards and undergo an approval process.
This initiative echoes a previous attempt by Amazon in 2019 to establish an Israeli platform, which ultimately faltered by late 2021. That effort involved Israeli importers and retailers selling directly to consumers in shekels and Hebrew, with local shipping and warehousing. However, it failed to gain traction because Amazon did not establish local warehouses, leading to higher prices from Israeli suppliers compared to direct purchases from the US.
