Maccabi Tel Aviv's Mohamed Ali Camara Faces Scrutiny Amidst Defensive Woes

Maccabi Tel Aviv defender Mohamed Ali Camara is under pressure to stabilize the team's defense, a role for which he was primarily acquired. Last summer, Camara was close to joining Hapoel Be'er Sheva for a salary of around 300,000 euros net, but Maccabi Tel Aviv doubled his offer, securing his transfer. He was expected to be a key player in their pursuit of a third consecutive league championship. Instead, his tenure has been marked by inconsistency, despite the team winning the State Cup last season.

Camara's time at Maccabi has seen moments of brilliance interspersed with periods of confusion and disciplinary issues. In October of the previous year, he was suspended after an altercation with a metal bar in the locker room, leading many to believe he would be released. However, he remained with the club and began the current season with renewed determination. Despite this, the team was eliminated from European competitions in the summer, and defensive frailties persisted in league matches.

Maccabi Tel Aviv has struggled to maintain defensive stability, failing to score in a goalless draw against Bnei Sakhnin and also in a subsequent match against Beitar Jerusalem. While they bounced back with a 6-2 victory over Hapoel Haifa last Saturday, where Camara scored his first career brace, they conceded two goals. This highlights the ongoing defensive concerns, as the team brought Camara in to shore up their backline, a stark contrast to the solid defense displayed by Hapoel Tel Aviv this season.

The team's defensive options have been further depleted by the departures of Roy Revivo and Tyris Asante, who was their best defender last season and is now injured, along with Noam Ben Harush being sidelined. This has forced makeshift solutions, with James Tavernier at right-back and Sagiv Yehezkel potentially playing as an improvised left-back. For Maccabi Tel Aviv to succeed in the Toto Cup final and upcoming derby matches, Camara needs to provide consistent focus, tactical discipline, and avoid unnecessary risks, qualities he has not always demonstrated reliably.
