The Israeli franchisee of the fast-food chain KFC, Smart Service Key and Key, has filed for bankruptcy protection with the Beersheba District Court. The company, which operates 13 branches, reported debts totaling 50 million shekels, including 37 million shekels owed to its owners.

The filing attributes the financial distress to the "Iron Swords" war, which began on October 7, 2023. The company cited a sharp decline in profitability due to fewer customers, a severe impact on tourism, and a general consumer slowdown. Simultaneously, operating expenses increased as the company continued to establish and open new branches, exacerbating the financial strain.

According to the company's request, marketing activities were almost entirely halted in 2023, and menu innovations were postponed. The owners, who are Russian residents, had invested 37 million shekels as owner loans to sustain operations. They had been seeking a strategic investor, but marketing restrictions during the war further reduced transaction volumes, worsening the situation.

In 2024, the company incurred a loss of 9 million shekels. The filing highlighted that rent and fixed expenses continued despite many restaurants operating at significantly reduced capacity or being closed, creating a cash flow deficit that hindered operations. The company is requesting the court appoint a temporary trustee to allow for the temporary continuation of its business activities.
