The draw for the eighth round of the Israel State Cup in football has set up an early-stage derby between fierce rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv. This encounter comes just before their Toto Cup final match scheduled for Thursday.
This round marks the entry of Premier League teams into the competition, Israel's second most prestigious football tournament. The draw pits the two Tel Aviv clubs against each other in a single-elimination match, meaning one will be eliminated early from the cup.
Last year, the two teams met in the round of 16, with Maccabi advancing past Hapoel after a penalty shootout. In other notable matchups, league champions Hapoel Be'er Sheva will travel to face Sakhnin, while Maccabi Haifa is set to play against Hapoel Ra'anana from the National League.
Beitar Jerusalem will host MS Ashdod, the current leader of the National League. Ashdod recently eliminated Bnei Yehuda, the second-placed team in the National League, in a dramatic match decided by a late penalty in extra time.
The matches for this round, featuring the last 32 teams, are scheduled to take place between December 24th and 28th. Only one team will advance from each game.
