Israeli Extradited to US for Alleged $2.8 Million Crypto Fraud

An Israeli citizen, also holding Russian citizenship, has been extradited to the United States to face charges of fraud, computer crimes, dealing in stolen property, and money laundering. The extradition was facilitated by the State Prosecutor's Office International Department in cooperation with the Israel Police's Operational Coordination Unit and Interpol.

The suspect was apprehended at Ben Gurion Airport in May 2025 while attempting to travel to Russia. According to the U.S. extradition request, in late July 2022, the individual identified a vulnerability in the "Nomad" system, which is used to convert cryptocurrency between different blockchain networks by locking coins for token issuance. Prosecutors allege that the suspect altered the system's code to issue digital tokens without depositing any actual funds.

On August 1, 2022, the individual allegedly withdrew tokens valued at approximately $2.8 million from a Nomad wallet. Subsequently, these tokens were converted into various cryptocurrencies and moved between digital wallets to obscure their origin. This method is reportedly similar to other recent cases, including a crypto trading case in Haifa involving tens of millions of dollars.

Legal proceedings in Israel determined the individual was eligible for extradition. An appeal to the Supreme Court was rejected, with the court establishing significant precedents for digital crime. The court broadened the interpretation of "unauthorized computer material access" to include exploiting security flaws and programming errors. It also ruled that the public nature of blockchain networks does not preclude money laundering charges, as wallet ownership often remains anonymous, complicating fund tracing.

Further appeals for a further hearing before the Supreme Court president were also denied. The extradition case was handled by lawyer Avi Kronenberg from the State Prosecutor's Office International Department. This case adds to a series of extraditions of Israelis to the U.S. for serious computer-related offenses, and the legal precedents set are expected to influence future similar cases.
