Discord to Make Public Servers Searchable on Google Globally

Discord is implementing a significant policy change that will make content from public servers discoverable on search engines like Google, beginning in November. This shift moves Discord from a largely private digital space to one where conversations can appear in search results. The change specifically targets "discoverable servers," which are public communities with over 1,000 members that have been active for at least eight weeks and allow free joining. Discord estimates there are over 63,000 such servers worldwide.

The rollout will occur in two phases. Mid-next month, these servers will gain public web pages featuring AI-generated conversation summaries. About a month later, search engines will begin indexing selected text messages from these channels. This means users could find solutions to technical issues or game-related problems directly through Google searches, even without a Discord account or membership in the community. Discord states that usernames and profile pictures will not be displayed with public messages, and image or document files will not be exposed at this stage. However, privacy experts warn that messages containing identifying details, personal links, or unique writing styles could still reveal a user's identity.

A notable point for Israeli users is that, unlike in the European Union, the UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and South Korea where this feature is opt-in, Discord is enabling it by default in Israel and the US. Users designated as minors will be automatically excluded from this feature. To prevent their messages from being indexed, users can navigate to Discord's settings, select "Data and Privacy," and disable the option for displaying content from public channels. It is important to note that this setting change only affects future messages and does not remove or prevent the indexing of previously posted content or AI summarization of general channel topics.

This strategic move by Discord is driven by economic interests, aiming to leverage its vast repository of technical and community knowledge, similar to how Reddit has benefited from search engine visibility. By making this data accessible, Discord seeks to attract new users and provide authentic, human-generated content for AI models and search engines. The company assures that private servers, direct messages, and closed groups will remain completely protected and inaccessible to search engines. Discord advises all users, particularly in Israel, to proactively adjust their privacy settings to control the visibility of their messages.
