Three additional suspects were arrested on Thursday in connection with an alleged vote-buying scheme aimed at benefiting the Arab party Ra'am in the Negev region. The suspects are accused of compromising election integrity and are expected to be interrogated.
A senior police official told i24NEWS that "every complaint will be examined. We will turn over every stone to ensure election integrity is not compromised. Those who violated election integrity will be punished in the harshest way possible." This statement follows earlier police indications that no unusual incidents concerning election integrity had been identified.
The investigation, which began two days prior, initially led to the arrest of three individuals from Segev Shalom and Ar'ara in the Negev. They were suspected of planning to distribute money to citizens in exchange for votes for Ra'am. During searches of their homes, cash, envelopes, and notes were seized. The investigation is being conducted by the fraud unit of the Southern District.
One of the initial suspects, a 38-year-old doctor, confirmed holding home meetings to encourage voting for Ra'am but denied any involvement in vote-buying. A court ordered his release to house arrest, citing insufficient evidence, with a stay of execution pending an appeal. Investigators are also examining whether the suspects acted on behalf of a public official.
The arrests of two other suspects in the original case were extended until Sunday. One of them, a bus driver, admitted to being a Ra'am activist. Cash was found at his home, and envelopes with Arabic writing, Ra'am ballots, and green shirts and flags were discovered in his vehicle. His lawyer argued that the seized cash amount was consistent with his salary as a driver.
With the latest arrests, the investigation into the alleged compromise of election integrity has expanded.
