Israel Faces Political Stalemate After Election Results

Following the recent Knesset elections, Israel finds itself in a complex political deadlock, with neither Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc nor Gadi Eisenkot's opposition bloc securing a majority to form a government. Both Netanyahu and Eisenkot may receive a mandate from the President to form a coalition, but both will need to compromise or abandon previous commitments.

Official results show Netanyahu's bloc with 53 seats, Eisenkot's "Yashar" bloc with 48, and Arab parties with 19 seats in the 120-seat Knesset. President Isaac Herzog, noting the high voter turnout, emphasized the need to avoid new elections and urged political parties to be flexible during upcoming negotiations. He is set to receive the official results next week, after which consultations with parliamentary factions will begin to determine who will be tasked with forming a government.

Several scenarios are being considered. One involves Netanyahu attempting to form a government, potentially a national unity government with Eisenkot's party, though Eisenkot's previous stances make this unlikely. Another possibility is a narrower coalition excluding certain parties, but this faces opposition from leaders unwilling to serve under Netanyahu and Netanyahu's reluctance to abandon traditional allies.

Alternatively, Eisenkot could be tasked with forming a government. This might involve an offer to Netanyahu for a broad unity government excluding ultra-Orthodox, Arab, and other specific parties, though Likud is unlikely to cede leadership. Eisenkot could also attempt to form a government solely with "Change Bloc" parties, but they lack sufficient seats. A government relying on the support or abstention of Arab parties is another option, but Avigdor Lieberman has stated he will not support such a government, forcing Eisenkot to seek alternative support.

A final scenario involves repeated elections if no candidate can form a government. The Knesset could also be dissolved before all formation attempts are exhausted, a precedent set in 2019. However, there is currently no clear majority supporting new elections, and opposition parties may seek to block such a move to preserve their chances of forming an alternative government.
