  • President Herzog stressed the need to avoid new elections after the inconclusive general election results.
  • Official election results are expected to be delivered to the President next Wednesday.
  • The President will begin consultations with all factions to form a new government.
  • Current preliminary results show no bloc with a clear majority.
  • The mandate to form a government will be assigned to the most likely candidate, not necessarily the largest party leader.

President Isaac Herzog has called on all parties to "come with an open mind" as he prepares to begin consultations following the recent general election, which did not yield a clear majority for any bloc. Speaking after the election, Herzog emphasized the importance of avoiding another round of elections, stating, "We must do everything, certainly after yesterday, not to return to additional elections." He praised the high voter turnout as "very impressive" and a "badge of honor for Israeli society," reflecting a strong desire for democracy.

The President is expected to receive the official election results from Supreme Court Justice Noam Solberg next Wednesday. Following this, Herzog will commence the process of consultations, meeting with each faction to discuss the formation of a new government. Current results, with 93% of ballots counted, show the Netanyahu bloc with 53 mandates, the Gantz bloc with 48, and Arab parties with 19.

President Herzog holds the crucial responsibility of deciding whom to task with forming the government first. While he prefers to wait for the official results, expected in a few days, his office indicated that quiet contacts might begin as early as this Friday. The formal consultations with parties at the Presidential Residence will start after next Wednesday, after which the President will assign the task to the candidate deemed most likely to succeed.

It has been clarified by the President's residence that the mandate will not necessarily be given to the leader of the largest party. The mandate lasts for 28 days, with a possible 14-day extension. If a candidate fails to form a government, the mandate can be transferred to another Knesset member. Should all attempts fail, the Knesset may dissolve, leading to new elections within 90 days. Herzog previously expressed his commitment to forming a stable government and preventing repeat elections, highlighting the nation's significant challenges.
