Senior economic commentator and journalist Nehemia Strasler has requested to end his tenure at the Haaretz newspaper, Globes has learned. Strasler began his career at the paper approximately 44 years ago, in 1983, as a senior economic editor. After 16 years, he transitioned to the role of senior commentator, a position he has held since. His final column is scheduled to be published this coming Friday, with a farewell meeting to be held next week.

Strasler, 75, holds degrees in economics and business administration from Tel Aviv University. He developed a distinct journalistic voice advocating for free market economics while criticizing monopolies and pressure groups. He authored the books "And They Won't Fool You" and the children's book "Where Did the Money Tree Go?". Over his career, Strasler received four prominent journalism awards, including the Sokolov Award in 1988 for exposing the excessive pension affair of bank executives during the 1983 crisis and a lifetime achievement award from the Journalists Association in Tel Aviv in 2012 for his advocacy for consumers and the economy.

Strasler stated, "After 44 years of writing and editing, I felt it was time to retire. I thank Haaretz for being my professional home and for the freedom of writing it gave me." His departure is reportedly unrelated to recent layoffs at the Haaretz-TheMarker group, which involved the dismissal of 35 employees, including 19 journalists covered by a collective agreement, and the reduction of five additional positions.
