The Portland Trail Blazers, with Israeli player Deni Avdija, have started their NBA season with three consecutive wins, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 136-129 on Wednesday. Following the game, analyst Sam Vecenie of "The Athletic" highlighted Avdija's impact, particularly his ability to drive to the basket and his nine assists, many of which likely led to three-point shots.
Vecenie noted that the Lakers struggled to contain Avdija's drives. He observed that Portland's offense effectively attacked the rim, with Avdija driving and Ja Morant utilizing floaters. The analyst praised Portland's offensive depth, stating that having multiple high-level playmakers makes them dangerous.
He further explained that Damian Lillard primarily serves to create spacing for Avdija and Morant. Vecenie also commended Mike Norrie for feeding Avdija the ball on cuts to the basket and in situations where defenders must stay close to him, forcing them to either guard his shot or risk him driving to the hoop.
While acknowledging the "deadly combination" in Portland's offense, Vecenie pointed out defensive weaknesses, particularly with Lillard and Morant. He suggested that while this was manageable against the Lakers, it could be a challenge against teams like the Knicks, Celtics, or Spurs, who have strong offensive creators and size. Vecenie anticipates Portland will continue their winning momentum against weaker teams.
