Swiss banking firm Julius Baer is warning of potential short-term volatility in Israeli assets following the recent Knesset elections, as no single bloc appears to have secured a majority to form a stable government. Analyst Irene Tsakridou noted the high voter turnout and projected a period of complex coalition negotiations. While anticipating some market fluctuations due to uncertainty over fiscal policy and war spending, the firm also cited Israel's strong economic fundamentals as a stabilizing factor. The bank also addressed global debt market trends, advising investors to favor quality credit assets.

Swiss banking giant Julius Baer has issued a special review following the Israeli Knesset election results, cautioning of potential short-term volatility in Israeli assets. The warning stems from the apparent lack of a clear majority for any bloc, making the formation of a stable government uncertain.

According to Irene Tsakridou, a fixed income analyst at Julius Baer, the election saw a high voter turnout of approximately 78%, the highest since 1999, indicating significant public engagement in a highly polarized political environment. Preliminary results suggest the right-wing bloc led by Benjamin Netanyahu secured around 54 seats, slightly more than the opposition bloc led by Gadi Eisenkot, with Arab parties expected to hold 18 seats. This political stalemate is anticipated to lead to weeks of complex coalition negotiations and potentially another election.

Tsakridou stated, "We expect some volatility in Israeli assets in the short term until a new government is formed and provides greater clarity on fiscal policy, particularly regarding budget cuts and war spending." However, she expressed cautious optimism, highlighting Israel's strong macroeconomic fundamentals and the Bank of Israel's credible monetary policy as anchors for stability.

The review also addressed a concerning trend in international debt markets: a nearly 400 basis point rise in low-rated (CCC) bond spreads since the start of the year. Afonso Borges from Julius Baer's fixed income research department sought to allay fears of a global recession, explaining that this widening is largely due to a shrinking, concentrated market and distress among specific issuers, rather than a broad macroeconomic indicator. He noted that the U.S. CCC bond market has contracted significantly, making its index easily influenced by isolated events.

Julius Baer's conclusion for investors is to avoid broadly reducing credit risk exposure but to continue favoring higher-quality credit assets in the current market environment.
