The Ebola virus outbreak in Africa continues to spread, with over 10,000 confirmed infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo since May, and nearly half of those infected have died. The virus has also appeared in neighboring countries, with Uganda reporting 20 cases and 22 deaths, and Kenya confirming nine cases, two of which were fatal. A case was also identified in Nigeria in a woman who had recently returned from Uganda, with her infection source still unknown. The Ministry of Health has updated its travel advisories, recommending avoidance of travel to affected areas in Congo and non-essential trips to other parts of the country, as well as to bordering nations like Uganda, South Sudan, and others. Consideration is also advised for travel to Kenya and Nigeria.

Compounding the health crisis, medical teams in Congo face violence from local residents. In one incident, a healthcare worker was murdered in the town of Boende after being attacked by armed youths who accused him and his colleague of contaminating water sources with Ebola. The colleague was injured, and other staff members sought police protection at the hospital due to safety fears.

Professor Cyril Cohen, Head of the Laboratory for Immunotherapy at Bar-Ilan University, expressed concern over the outbreak's scale, noting the high mortality rate of approximately 50% and the virus's spread to Nigeria indicates a lack of control. He stated that this outbreak is geographically the most extensive in a relatively short period, surpassing the number of cases seen in the 2014-2016 epidemic during a comparable timeframe. Professor Cohen warned that such outbreaks can persist for months or even years but does not anticipate a spread to Israel or Europe.
