Deni Avdija Shines in Trail Blazers' Third Straight Win

The Portland Trail Blazers secured their third consecutive victory to start the season, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 136-129 on Wednesday morning. This marks the first time since the 2022-23 season that Portland has begun with a 3-0 record. Deni Avdija led the Trail Blazers in scoring with 23 points, matching Ja Morant's output. Avdija also contributed significantly with 9 assists, 4 rebounds, and a steal, shooting efficiently from the field and hitting 4 of 7 three-pointers.

Morant praised the team's chemistry, highlighting the ease of getting open shots due to the presence of multiple talented players like Avdija and Damian Lillard. "It's just so fun. There are so many guys here who can do so many things. It allows me to get easier shots," Morant stated. He added, "It's a blessing to play alongside one of the greatest shooters of all time (Lillard) and alongside a talent like Deni. We just need to keep connecting and maintaining the chemistry."

A detailed analysis from Blazer's Edge, titled "The Two Sides of Deni Avdija," acknowledged his offensive prowess while noting defensive shortcomings. The article suggested Avdija is expected to be a defensive anchor alongside Toumani Camara and Donovan Clingan, but his defense was described as "mediocre," with him appearing slow-footed and committing numerous fouls. The analysis placed Avdija between the defensive-minded Camara and Clingan and the offense-focused Lillard and Morant, questioning which group the team needs him to align with.

However, Avdija's offensive performance was particularly strong, especially when he played with the second unit without Lillard and Morant. Coach the coach adopted an interesting strategy, giving Avdija more freedom to handle the ball and score, suggesting he might fill the role of leading the second unit's offense. Avdija was crucial in the decisive fourth quarter, scoring 9 points, dishing out 4 assists, and making 2 three-pointers in the 34-26 quarter win. One critical three-pointer with under three minutes remaining extended Portland's lead to 128-124.

Despite facing significant foul trouble, including his fourth foul midway through the second quarter, Avdija played cautiously but remained impactful. The team's bench unit, including Avdija, demonstrated superior ball movement and offensive harmony compared to the starters, scoring effectively and sharing the ball well. Coach the coach indicated a desire to make Avdija more efficient, noting that past injuries stemmed from him trying to do too much. With Lillard and Morant capable of driving and finding him, Avdija can now score with fewer dribbles, rather than needing to create offense entirely on his own.
