Following exit polls showing no clear winner in Israel's elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted his Likud party's right to form the next government. Opposition leaders, including Yair Lapid, Gadi Eisenkot, and Yair Golan, declared Netanyahu's bloc had lost and called for his replacement. Polls indicated neither bloc secured a majority, with Arab parties holding a significant number of seats, complicating coalition formation. The final results will determine who can assemble a Knesset majority.

  • Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims his Likud party must form the next Israeli government.
  • Exit polls show no clear majority for any bloc, complicating coalition formation.
  • Opposition leaders Yair Lapid, Gadi Eisenkot, and Yair Golan declared Netanyahu's bloc defeated.
  • Gadi Eisenkot vowed to immediately work to replace Netanyahu's government.
  • Yair Golan stated the public fired the Netanyahu government and his party seeks new coalition partners.
  • Arab parties hold a significant bloc of seats, potentially crucial for coalition building.

Following the release of election exit polls on Tuesday evening, Israeli party leaders began reacting to the results and stating their demands for forming the next government. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that the Likud party should lead the next government, while opposition leaders claimed the public had voted against his continued leadership. Exit polls indicated no clear majority for either bloc, with Likud remaining the largest party but neither side securing the 61 seats needed for a majority without additional partners.

Netanyahu, in a conversation with associates, stated, "We are the largest party. We need to form the government." He also warned against a government supported by Arab parties, calling it a "terror government." Former Prime Minister Yair Lapid presented a starkly different interpretation, declaring, "Don't let them confuse you: Netanyahu's bloc suffered a severe defeat. This is a complete collapse and the public told them to go home."

Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the National Unity party, also interpreted the initial results as a sign of "complete lack of confidence in Netanyahu and the government of October seventh, by the Zionist majority and the majority of Israeli citizens." He added, "If these are the final results, this is a victory for the state-Zionist majority in Israel." Eisenkot announced his intention to "immediately work to implement the people's decision, to replace Netanyahu's government and establish a Zionist enlistment government, as soon as possible."

Yair Golan, leader of the Democratic party, also declared that the public had voted to replace the government, stating, "The public has spoken, they fired the Netanyahu government." He indicated his party would work to form a new government and was prepared to reach agreements with other partners, saying, "We are ready to work with all our partners, bridge the gaps, and take responsibility."

Despite these declarations, the exit polls did not grant any side a clear majority. According to a Channel 12 poll, Netanyahu's bloc received 50 seats, his opponents' bloc 52, and Arab parties 18. A Channel 14 poll showed the right-wing bloc with 60 seats, the left-wing bloc with 43, and Arab parties with 17. The final outcome will depend on the actual results and the ability of a candidate to form a Knesset majority.
