The Israeli shekel strengthened by 1.5% against the US dollar to 3.02 shekels, continuing a trend from the previous week, amid high voter turnout in Israel's general elections. Analysts suggest the currency's sharp rise is primarily driven by election day dynamics, with traders possibly pricing in a decisive outcome. Experts note that the formation of a stable coalition and clear economic policy are key factors for future shekel performance.

  • The Israeli shekel strengthened by 1.5% against the dollar to 3.02 shekels.
  • The shekel has appreciated 3% against the dollar since last Tuesday.
  • The dollar index (DXY) gained 0.25% against a basket of currencies during the same period.
  • J.P. Morgan previously predicted election day could move the shekel by up to 3%.
  • Investors are focused on a stable coalition and clear economic policy post-election.

The Israeli shekel has strengthened significantly against the US dollar, rising by approximately 1.5% to trade at 3.02 shekels per dollar. This marks a continuation of a strengthening trend that began last week, with the shekel appreciating about 3% against the dollar since the previous Tuesday. This appreciation occurred even as the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the dollar's strength against a basket of major global currencies, gained about 0.25% during the same period.

While gains on Wall Street may have contributed to the shekel's rise, likely due to hedging activities by institutional investors, the sharp movement is primarily attributed to the ongoing general elections. Analysts at J.P. Morgan had previously estimated that election day could cause the shekel to fluctuate by up to 3% in either direction. They noted that while significant policy changes are not expected, the election outcome could influence Israel's relations with Western allies and foreign investors' perception of Israel, particularly concerning judicial reforms and policies in Gaza and the West Bank.

The current sharp movement might also indicate that traders anticipate a decisive election result. Dr. Ilan Gildin, partner and manager of a hedge fund at Carney Family Office, commented that investors are focused not just on the leading party but on whether the election will yield a stable coalition capable of passing a responsible budget and providing economic policy clarity. He suggested that a result reducing uncertainty could boost the shekel and Israeli assets, whereas prolonged coalition negotiations or repeat elections could negatively impact them.

Gildin concluded that the true test will begin after the election, assessing the ability to make fiscal decisions rather than remaining in a prolonged state of waiting.
