Political commentator Amit Segal noted a significant shift in voter turnout patterns during the 26th Knesset elections, describing it as unprecedented in over 50 years. As of 2 PM, 44.9% of eligible voters had cast ballots, a six-point increase compared to the same time in the 2022 elections. Segal attributed this rise primarily to the Arab public and strong turnout in traditionally center-left strongholds, while noting a slight increase in Likud-aligned areas and a small but significant decrease in the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) sector. He concluded that the political compass is currently moving towards the center-left.
Further analysis by journalist Avraham Freund indicated a relative increase of approximately 16.7% in voter participation in Arab communities by noon, compared to the previous elections. This contrasted with a 16% rise in center-left strongholds and only a 5% increase in right-wing areas. Specific turnout figures for Arab towns included 36.9% in Rahat and 24.9% in Nazareth by midday. For comparison, the final turnout in Arab and Druze communities in the 2022 elections was 53.2%.
The situation within the Haredi public appears more complex. Midday data from the election committee showed turnout rates of 33.2% in Modi'in Illit, 32% in Elad, 28.4% in Bnei Brak, and 28.3% in Beitar Illit. Jerusalem reported 27.1% and Beit Shemesh 26.4%, though these figures encompass all residents, not exclusively the Haredi population.
It is important to note that local data was collected at different times, making definitive conclusions about a decline in Haredi participation solely based on this information challenging without precise hour-by-hour comparisons to previous elections. Nevertheless, the unusual turnout figures have generated considerable interest in the political arena, particularly due to the varying participation rates among different voter groups. Segal's analysis, however, is an estimation based on turnout trends, not actual vote results. A clearer picture of the mandate distribution is expected after the polls close at 10 PM and the first exit polls are released.
