Israeli leaders and colleagues are mourning the passing of Shufi Paz, a prominent social activist known for her leadership in the fight against the presence of asylum seekers in South Tel Aviv. Paz was laid to rest at the age of 74.
Her funeral was attended by Speaker of the Knesset Amir Ohana, Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir, Yoav Kisch, and Yitzhak Wasserlauf, along with other Members of Knesset, family, and friends. Many shared memories of their years of joint activism and the legacy Paz left behind.
Speaker Ohana recalled knowing Paz before entering politics, working together for the residents of South Tel Aviv. He described her as "a wonderful, very brave, very determined woman with a sharp sense of humor and a good heart." He noted her dedication to the elderly and vulnerable in her neighborhood and recalled her numerous arrests during protests, even joking that she seemed "addicted to the experience of arrest cells."
Member of Knesset Limor Son Har Melech tearfully remembered Paz as a "fighter" for the State of Israel and its Jewish identity. She emphasized Paz's courage in challenging what she perceived as "distorted morality" and urged leaders to learn from her willingness to pay personal costs for her beliefs. Son Har Melech stated that Paz "broke boundaries, went out of her comfort zone, and moved from a very embracing and supportive camp to a place where she became persecuted and alienated."
Other figures, including Chairman of the Constitution Committee Simcha Rothman, Minister of Education Yoav Kisch, MK Ariel Kallner, Zehut party Chairman Moshe Feiglin, and former MK Michael Ben-Ari, also paid tribute to Paz. They remembered her as a "fearless fighter," an inspiration, a unifier, and a role model for her determination, courage, and unwavering commitment to her cause, particularly for the residents of South Tel Aviv and the preservation of Israel's Jewish character.
