The "Veshinantam" Torah initiative, led by Berel Karniel, is encouraging long-term memorization of Talmudic pages studied in yeshivas and kollels through periodic examinations for students and married scholars. These exams, held during the "bein hazmanim" breaks, cover an increasing volume of Gemara pages, ranging from 50 to hundreds of pages. Participants can be tested on the entire Babylonian Talmud, Rashi, and Tosafot, using a cumulative review method where each exam requires re-testing on all previously studied pages. Examinees may choose any tractate they wish to be tested on. Students from all streams of Judaism, including Hasidic, Lithuanian, and Sephardic, participate.
The initiative was founded 45 years ago by Rabbi Azriel Tauber. Since its inception, tens of thousands have been tested on entire tractates and even the entire Talmud.
