Netherlands Reverses Eurovision 2027 Participation Decision
The Netherlands has reversed its decision to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, citing a lack of sufficient support among broadcasters. The Dutch public broadcaster NPO announced the withdrawal after initially stating the country would return after a year's absence. This follows AVROTROS's earlier decision to boycott the contest due to Israel's participation, which the NPO had intended to bypass. While the Netherlands will not send a representative, Dutch broadcaster NOS will still air the event.

The Netherlands will not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, which is scheduled to be held in Bulgaria. This decision reverses an announcement made by the Dutch public broadcaster NPO just last month, which stated the country would return to the competition after a one-year absence. The NPO announced on Tuesday that it had decided to withdraw after consultations with broadcasters in the Netherlands, citing a lack of sufficient support for the move.
Zet de Rennie, Chairwoman of the NPO Executive Board, stated that while initial discussions suggested adequate support for a return, "unfortunately, we were unable to find a suitable format for this." She concluded, "Therefore, we must conclude that it is still too early to participate in Eurovision in 2027. In light of the sensitivities surrounding the issues at hand, we have decided to stop at this stage."
This decision nullifies the NPO's September announcement to rejoin the contest, even with Israel's participation. At that time, the NPO had declared it would take responsibility for selecting the Dutch representative. This followed AVROTROS, the long-time broadcaster of Dutch Eurovision entries, announcing its own withdrawal from the 2027 contest. AVROTROS had justified its decision by claiming Eurovision had lost its neutral character due to the participation of a country involved in a "wide military conflict," referring to Israel and the war in Gaza. The broadcaster argued that changes implemented by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) were insufficient to guarantee the contest's independence and neutrality.
The NPO's earlier plan aimed to separate the selection of the representative from the coverage of the contest, but the lack of consensus among broadcasters led to the current withdrawal. Despite the non-participation, Dutch public broadcaster NOS will still air the contest, including pre-show coverage and commentary in Dutch, allowing viewers to follow the event.
Netherlands was among five countries that boycotted Eurovision 2026 due to Israel's participation, alongside Ireland, Iceland, Spain, and Slovenia. Ireland has also announced its non-participation in 2027, while Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia have yet to make their decisions for the upcoming contest. Eurovision 2027 is expected to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, from May 11-15.
