Police in the Negev arrested a Bedouin local council member on Monday on suspicion of involvement in an iron bar assault against his niece, an attack that reportedly led the young woman to attempt suicide. According to the victim, her father, the brother of the council member, also participated in the beating. The father's detention has been extended by six days due to concerns for his daughter's safety.

The alleged assault occurred on Sunday, after which the young woman attempted to take her own life. She was rushed to Soroka Hospital in Be'er Sheva, where police investigators took her statement. She told investigators that her father, along with his brother (the council member) and another family member, attacked her with an iron bar. Investigators believe the men opposed choices the young woman had made in her life.

The police stated that an investigation was opened and officers from the Shagav Shalom station responded to the scene.
