Lebanese security officials have reported that Hezbollah has spent the past three months preparing for a potential resumption of hostilities with Israel, following the receipt of significant cash funding from Iran. The group, founded by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps in 1982, has sustained heavy losses in two wars with Israel since 2024, including thousands of fighters and many leaders, and has seen a large portion of its arsenal destroyed. Despite Israeli forces occupying strongholds in southern Lebanese villages and increasing political pressure in Beirut for its disarmament, Hezbollah remains committed to fighting Israel. Two Lebanese security sources told Reuters that the group has used the lull in fighting since June to rearm, focusing on acquiring explosives and producing drones for use against Israeli targets. One source and another individual close to Hezbollah indicated that the group received tens of millions of dollars from Iran to bolster its military capabilities. This funding is in addition to approximately $200 million previously reported by Reuters to have been sent by Tehran to aid displaced families in Hezbollah's Shiite strongholds. According to one of these sources and three other security officials familiar with the group's operations, Hezbollah is also working to rebuild its command and control structures, which reportedly collapsed during critical battles. Hezbollah's media office responded to Reuters' inquiries by stating that any resistance against Israel's occupation of Lebanese territory is legitimate and denied that the group's command and control systems had collapsed. The Israeli military declined to comment, and Iran's UN mission in Geneva did not immediately respond to questions. A U.S. State Department spokesperson affirmed Washington's continued efforts to choke off Hezbollah's finances through sanctions and other measures, with a U.S. Treasury Department spokesperson noting that Iran's financial resources and transfer methods are diminishing.
