Tax Authority Officials Suspected of Bribery, Case Sent to Prosecutors

Israel's National Fraud Unit (YAHA) in Lahav 433, in cooperation with the Central Tax Investigations Unit, has concluded a complex investigation into suspicions of serious offenses including bribery, fraud, breach of trust, and money laundering. The investigation involved 11 suspects, including former senior public officials at the Tax Authority. Investigators suspect that several Tax Authority employees accepted bribes, enabling the submission of fictitious tax refund claims totaling approximately 80 million shekels.

During the covert and overt investigation, evidence emerged suggesting that a deputy tax commissioner and a former senior coordinator at the Tax Authority accepted bribes over several years from an accountant representing taxpayers. Together, they allegedly perpetrated a large-scale fraud against the authorities, defrauding the state of over 80 million shekels.

The investigation file, which was overseen from its inception by the Tax and Economic Crimes Prosecution, has now been transferred to the State Prosecutor's Office for review and decision, along with the investigating unit's recommendations. The suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
