Singer Yehonatan Mergui flew back to Israel just one day before the elections to cast his vote, emphasizing the importance he places on the upcoming vote. In an Instagram story, Mergui stated, "I believe that everyone's voice matters. Always and especially this time. For the future of us all." He added, "You don't need to understand politics to feel that change is needed, and I, like my friends and family, hope it happens."
Mergui's decision to return comes after years of focusing on his international career. Following his breakthrough in Israel on "The Next Star for Eurovision" in 2018, he began working in the international market, eventually moving to Los Angeles to advance his music career in the United States. During this period, he released English songs, collaborated with American music industry professionals, and appeared on overseas television shows, while also maintaining musical activity in Israel. In January 2026, he signed a new international recording contract after participating in the Festigal.
Despite his time abroad, Mergui stressed his connection to Israel, writing, "Perhaps precisely because I am abroad so much in recent years, I understand more and more how dear this home is to us. How it is not taken for granted and that being Israeli is not just a right, it is a responsibility."
Alongside his international career, Mergui continued to engage with his Israeli audience, returning for performances and local projects. In February 2024, he participated in a fundraiser at the home of Haim Saban, attended by then-U.S. President Joe Biden, where Mergui thanked Biden for his support of Israel since the war began. Mergui noted his visit would be very short but sufficient for him to vote, concluding, "So I'm coming, even if for two days. May we all have a good week with good energy for a better future. Amen."
