Rabbi Yuval Cherlow has cautioned against the deterioration of political discourse during election periods, urging a commitment to truth and integrity. Speaking at the Orot Shaul Yeshiva, he criticized the spread of false information, the distortion of opponents' views, and the taking of statements out of context.

"The first essential thing is to adopt one word, and that is the word truth," Rabbi Cherlow stated. He emphasized that being a person of truth means not being manipulative, not distorting facts, and not spreading fake news. This commitment to truth extends to presenting the opposing side's positions faithfully, rather than caricaturing them to make them easier to attack.

The rabbi also condemned the use of generalizations against entire political camps based on the statement of a single individual, calling it a manipulative and false tactic. He identified the removal of statements from their context as one of the most damaging actions to public discourse, explaining that while the words may have been spoken, their meaning is twisted when presented without their original context.

Rabbi Cherlow further addressed the tactic of attributing ulterior, illegitimate motives to political opponents instead of engaging with their arguments, which he said silences the other side and hinders substantive discussion. He warned against the escalation from debating ideas to personal attacks, slander, and name-calling, which he noted fosters hatred and contempt.

He also criticized the influence of social media, where offensive and cynical remarks often gain greater visibility. Rabbi Cherlow concluded by stressing that adhering to proper discussion rules does not aim to obscure disagreements but rather to enable genuine and meaningful ideological struggle, avoiding tools that can tear apart, harm, divide, or endanger the discourse.
