The letter cites the party's alleged abandonment of Sephardic yeshiva students as the reason for the decision. This move follows a similar, though later rescinded, declaration by Rabbi Moshe Tzadka, head of the Porat Yosef Yeshiva. Rabbi Tzadka had initially signed a letter urging people not to vote for Shas, but after meeting with Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef and Rabbi Moshe Maya, he withdrew his signature. He clarified that while he and his father did not vote, those who do vote should cast their ballot for Shas.
Earlier, Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri claimed on the program "The Patriots" that flyers denigrating religious parties were distributed in Haredi neighborhoods just before Shabbat to suppress voter turnout. Deri suggested that the left wing was behind this effort. He emphasized the importance of voting, stating that if every supporter votes and encourages their circle to do the same, the party will win, warning against complacency.
