Member of Knesset Yuray Lahav-Hertzanu of the Yesh Atid party has sharply criticized Minister of Environmental Protection Idit Silman, accusing her of prioritizing political maneuvering over critical environmental and public health issues. The confrontation occurred during a Knesset plenum session in February 2024, where Silman, instead of addressing a severe report on air pollution's impact on mortality, focused on criticizing opposition lawmakers and referencing the US presidency. Lahav-Hertzanu expressed shock at Silman's alleged disregard for public health, stating, "She sold our children's health for her primaries, and even failed at that." He recalled Silman's dismissal of his concerns about air pollution deaths, which she reportedly delayed addressing for months.

Lahav-Hertzanu, who is running for Knesset, highlighted his own work on environmental legislation, including efforts to advance a climate law during the previous "Change Government." He claimed Silman refused to grant continuity to the climate bill passed in its first reading, opting instead for her own "full of holes" version. He described Silman's approach as "indifference" and criticized her leadership at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, citing frequent changes in directors, high staff turnover, and the failure to appoint a chief scientist for an extended period. He also pointed out that only 27% of local authorities have climate crisis preparedness plans.

The MK contrasted his experience with that of former committee chair Yakov Asher, whom he described as pragmatic and a facilitator of compromise, enabling progress on environmental legislation despite ideological differences. However, he expressed strong disapproval of Asher's successor, Yitzhak Kroizer, calling him a "Kahanist" whose presence in environmental committee discussions was inappropriate and who allegedly used the platform for racist agendas and climate change denial.

Lahav-Hertzanu voiced deep concern about the future of environmental advocacy in the Knesset, fearing a lack of dedicated representatives. He stated, "I am scared by the thought that there will not be people in the Knesset for whom the environment is their mission." He emphasized the need for lawmakers with deep knowledge and commitment to effectively tackle complex environmental issues, citing his own party, Yesh Atid, as one of the few prioritizing environmental expertise. He outlined his party's key environmental goals, including a comprehensive climate law, rehabilitation of the Dead Sea, waste management reform, and relocation of polluting factories from Haifa Bay.

Reflecting on his own political aspirations, Lahav-Hertzanu expressed a desire to serve as Minister of Environmental Protection, viewing the role not as a popularity contest but as a tool to enact meaningful change for public health and natural resources. He criticized the current government's approach to environmental regulation, noting a lack of engagement from coalition members and citing instances where his efforts to advance environmental protection bills were met with indifference or ridicule.
