IDF Abolishes Senior International Law Post Amid Global Legal Battles

The Israeli military has eliminated the position of head of the International Law Division within the Military Advocate General Corps, a move that raises questions given the current international legal scrutiny of IDF operations. The decision, reported by Galei Tzahal (Army Radio), alters the structure for handling international law matters. Two departments focused on international law will continue to operate but will now report directly to the Chief, Major General Ofir, bypassing the former brigadier general-level head of the division.

The role of the division head was to centralize the handling of war crimes issues, assess the legality of military actions, and prepare legal documents for international bodies like the UN and the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This position was actually expanded at the start of the current war, transforming a previous department into a division headed by a brigadier general. Now, with the abolition of the role, these two departments will be without a dedicated division head.

The reasoning behind this decision remains unclear. The IDF confirmed the details to Galei Tzahal but declined to provide a further statement.
