Greek Basketball Scandal: Referee Arrested, Over Million Euros Seized

A major bribery and match-fixing scandal is shaking Greek basketball, leading to the arrest of six individuals, including a senior referee who officiates in the EuroLeague. Vasiliki Tsaroucha, known to Maccabi Tel Aviv fans from a game in Valencia, is suspected of receiving a large sum of money to manipulate game outcomes.

During police raids on the suspects' homes, authorities discovered cash amounts approaching, and possibly exceeding, one million euros. A Greek police spokesperson confirmed that significant sums were found with each of the six detainees, stating the total cash seized in the searches surpassed 850,000 euros.

The investigation, which lasted several months, was initiated and managed by prosecution and investigative authorities, not directly by the police, as witnesses or complainants approached the judicial system directly. This led to criminal charges being filed and arrest warrants issued by a qualified investigative judge.

All six arrest warrants were executed by the Greek police within 24 hours, and the suspects are currently in police custody. The scandal reportedly came to light when two active referees, seeking immunity, came forward to expose the alleged corruption within the basketball federation. These referees will not face criminal proceedings.
