The Haifa Municipality has summoned the management of the "Gadiv" and "Carmel Olefins" plants, part of the Bazan Group, for hearings that could lead to the cessation of their operations and the denial of operating permit renewals. The decision stems from instances where benzene levels in the air exceeded permissible limits. The hearings are scheduled for Sunday, October 25. Municipal officials reminded the plant management that their current temporary permits expire on October 31. According to N12 News, the municipality is also considering legal action. Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav stated that the municipality intends to utilize all legal powers to protect residents' health. On October 11, the Ministry of Health reported elevated benzene concentrations in the air near the Bazan Group's "Batei Zikuk" refinery complex in the Haifa Bay area. Consequently, classes at two schools in Kiryat Ata, "Arazim" and "HaTichon HaHevrati," were relocated to buildings further from the refineries. The Ministry of Environmental Protection indicated that the high benzene levels were caused by repair work at the "Gadiv" plant.
