The Bank of Israel's Monetary Policy Committee decided on October 21 to keep the benchmark interest rate at 3.25%, aligning with analyst predictions. This decision comes after three prior reductions, despite inflation being below the government's target. Political and economic factors, including election uncertainty and defense spending, may have influenced the cautious approach. Two more rate cuts are possible in the coming months if economic and security conditions remain stable.

  • Bank of Israel maintained its benchmark interest rate at 3.25% on October 21.
  • The decision followed three consecutive interest rate reductions by the committee.
  • September's consumer price index was negative 0.5%, with annual inflation at 1.6%.
  • Political uncertainty and defense spending are cited as potential influences on the decision.
  • Two more rate cuts are possible in the coming months if conditions permit.

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Israel announced on Wednesday, October 21, that it would maintain the benchmark interest rate at 3.25% annually. The prime rate, representing the commercial lending rate, stands at 4.75%. This decision, following three consecutive rate reductions, met the expectations of most financial analysts. The committee's next meeting to determine the interest rate is scheduled for November 23.

The Bank of Israel is pursuing a cautious monetary policy, opting not to lower the rate further despite low inflation. In September, the consumer price index registered a negative 0.5%, and the annual inflation rate is 1.6%, significantly below the government and central bank's target of 3%.

Israeli economists and financial analysts suggest that political factors may have influenced the committee's decision. These include pre-election uncertainty, ambiguity regarding the composition and direction of the next government, and the potential for confrontation with Iran. Economic considerations cited include high defense spending and the strengthening of the U.S. dollar against the Israeli shekel.

Previously, on September 1, the Bank of Israel implemented its fourth rate cut of the year and third in a row, bringing the annual inflation rate down to 1.5%, its lowest point since May 2021. In October 2025, the interest rate was 4.5%, meaning it has decreased by 1.25% over the past year. The Bank of Israel and its governor have indicated a target rate of 3% for the upcoming year. Barring significant shifts in the economy or security situation, two further rate reductions may occur in the coming months.
