The Tel Aviv District Planning and Building Commission has approved a comprehensive plan to significantly upgrade and expand the University train station in Tel Aviv. The project, promoted by the Planning Administration, aims to transform the station into an advanced, integrated transportation center connecting Israel Railways, bus lines, the light rail, and eventually the metro.

The University station is currently the fourth busiest in Israel, handling approximately 6 million passengers annually. It serves as a key gateway for students, academics, high-tech workers, and residents of northern Tel Aviv and the Yarkon area.

The upgrade includes expanding the station north and east, constructing a new passenger hall along Ayalon highways facing Rokach Boulevard, and building two new shaded bridges over the highways for safe passage. A central feature will be a shared passenger hall directly linking the train station to the Green Line of the light rail, which is currently under construction. Long-term plans include a connection to the metro network and an expanded bus terminal.

The plan also addresses crowd management for major events at nearby Park Hayarkon and Expo Tel Aviv, designing halls and passages for safe and rapid regulation of large crowds to reduce traffic congestion and encourage public transport use.

Erez Ben Eliezer, District planner for Tel Aviv in the Planning Administration, stated that the upgrade is part of a broader initiative to turn Ayalon highway stations into integrated transport hubs, emphasizing urban space improvement, passenger safety, and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

No official cost estimate or budget has been allocated yet, as the approved plan is purely statutory and planning-related. The project's advancement and funding will be contingent on the next Minister of Transport. Separately, starting October 22, 2026, for about two months, eight bus routes serving the Reading Terminal will temporarily change routes due to ongoing construction of the light rail's Green Line.
