Smugglers are now using helium balloons to transport drugs and weapons across the Jordan border, bypassing drone jamming technology. Approximately 100 kilograms of drugs were found near Ein Yahav, with concerns that the same infrastructure could be used for explosives. The IDF is developing countermeasures, including using drones to intercept the balloons, while security officials warn of a significant strategic risk.

Israeli security forces are facing a new smuggling tactic along the Jordan border, as criminals are reportedly shifting from drones to helium balloons to transport illicit goods. On Sunday, approximately 100 kilograms of drugs were discovered in agricultural fields near Kibbutz Ein Yahav in the Arava region. According to the Regavim Movement, smugglers are adopting helium balloons because they can carry significant payloads across the border and are unaffected by electronic jamming systems designed to counter drones.

The discovered shipment was intended to move from Israel into Jordan. This method is currently concentrated in the Arava region, specifically within the Yoav Brigade's sector, and has not yet spread north. Regavim indicates that a bidirectional smuggling network has developed in recent months, with drugs being sent to neighboring countries and weapons being brought into Israel. There is concern that these smuggling infrastructures could also be used to transport explosives and weapons, potentially falling into the hands of criminal and terrorist organizations.

The helium balloon method exploits wind currents for cross-border transport. The balloons carry payloads equipped with tracking systems, allowing smugglers to monitor their location and retrieve them after landing. The IDF has confirmed encountering several balloon-based smuggling incidents recently. While the military states that these balloons are detected by radar and observation systems, unlike drones, they require physical interception methods rather than electronic jamming.

The IDF describes the situation as a "learning competition" with smugglers and is exploring options such as using drones to collide with and destroy the balloons. Yehuda Kafah, Director of the Southern Region at the Regavim Movement, warned of a "serious strategic risk" posed by the ability to move payloads across the border, noting that the infrastructure used for drugs could be immediately repurposed for explosives and advanced weaponry. Kafah urged expanded action against criminal organizations and their infrastructure in the Negev and border areas, rather than solely relying on technological solutions.
