  • Drones helped uncover 711 archaeological findings in Israel's Negev desert.
  • The discoveries document human activity in the Shoalim stream area over 10,000 years.
  • Advanced aerial technology was crucial in identifying ancient terraces, pens, and structures.
  • Findings will be presented at an archaeological conference in Yeruham.
  • Researchers noted the Shoalim stream shows a remarkable settlement and cultural continuum.

An extensive archaeological survey in the Shoalim stream area, south of Yeruham in the Negev desert, has identified 711 archaeological findings over just 14 square kilometers. Utilizing advanced drone and aerial photography technologies, researchers were able to detect subtle changes in the terrain, revealing ancient agricultural terraces, sheep pens, pottery from various periods, and structures. These discoveries document human activity in the region spanning from approximately 10,000 years ago to the present day.

The findings will be presented at the "Ancient and Surprising Heritage of Yeruham" archaeological conference, hosted by the Yeruham Municipality in collaboration with the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Midbar Future Center. The use of drones has revolutionized archaeological research, enabling the mapping of large areas with high detail and the identification of ancient systems that are difficult to spot during ground surveys. Emil Aljam, a documentation and survey expert at the Israel Antiquities Authority, stated that drones have "completely changed the face of archaeology," allowing for the detection of millimeter-level topographic changes that reveal ancient agricultural systems, pens, and structures previously hard to discern.

Aljam described the Shoalim stream as an "amazing example of a settlement and cultural continuum of thousands of years that suddenly unfolds before us with amazing clarity." The Head of the Yeruham Local Council, Nili Aaron, emphasized Yeruham's connection to the Negev's deep roots, expressing pride in hosting groundbreaking research that reveals the city's rich historical tapestry and inviting the public to visit and learn.
