TikTok Challenge Leads to Fire Extinguisher Theft, Endangering Residents

Approximately 15 teenagers were detained for questioning in Netanya, Israel, on suspicion of stealing and discharging fire extinguishers throughout the city. Authorities believe the motive behind these actions is a dangerous challenge circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok.

The police issued a stern warning, emphasizing that this is not a harmless prank but rather a hazardous behavior that could result in loss of life. They highlighted that the theft and emptying of fire extinguishers leave residential buildings without essential firefighting equipment, potentially hindering initial response efforts during a fire and leading to severe damage to life and property.

Investigators from the Netanya police station and city inspectors have been actively working to address the issue since the weekend, following reports of stolen and discharged extinguishers in public areas, parking lots, and streets. Three minors, aged 14 and 15, were caught in the act and each fined 730 shekels by city inspectors. Further investigation identified over 10 additional teenagers suspected of similar involvement.

These minors were brought in for questioning at the police station, accompanied by their parents, who were informed of the criminal and safety implications of their children's actions. The police urged parents to be vigilant about their children's involvement in dangerous online challenges and to discuss the severe consequences of such acts. They also advised building committees to secure fire extinguisher cabinets to prevent theft while ensuring immediate access in emergencies.
