Spotify has launched its new paid subscription service for podcasts, called Memberships, in 34 countries including the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe. Israel is not included in this initial rollout. The feature, first previewed at the company's investor day earlier this year, allows listeners to directly support their favorite podcasts and receive exclusive benefits in return.
According to Spotify, creators will have the flexibility to decide what benefits to offer subscribers, such as exclusive audio or video episodes, bonus content, fewer ads, early access to new episodes, or access to the show's archive. Creators can also set up multiple subscription tiers at different price points. Listeners, both free and premium subscribers, can find and join these subscription offers directly within the Spotify app, with payments processed through the website.
Spotify is also introducing membership badges that will appear next to subscribers' comments and welcome messages that creators can record for new members. Creators will retain 90% of the revenue generated from these subscriptions. To be eligible, podcasts must be hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone, have at least three published episodes, and meet minimum listener and consumption hour thresholds within the last 30 days.
Eligible creators will also receive tools for targeted promotion, free trial periods, data on new subscribers, and potentially access to contact information from listeners who opt to share it. Among the podcasts launching subscriptions are Sam Harris's "Making Sense," "The Shawn Ryan Show," and YMH Studios, which is bringing 12 of its shows to the new subscription model.
This move is part of Spotify's broader strategy to attract podcast creators and compete more effectively with platforms like YouTube, particularly in the video podcasting space, as well as with creator funding platforms such as Patreon.
