Australian MP Critically Injured After Being Hit by Car; Suspect Had Criticized Government's Israel Stance

Independent federal Member of Parliament Helen Haines was critically injured on Monday after being struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Witnesses reported that the driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser turned around before hitting the 65-year-old lawmaker a second time. Haines sustained severe lower body injuries and underwent emergency surgery overnight. According to ABC News, she lost a leg, and doctors are working to save the other. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident a deliberate act, ruling out a simple loss of vehicle control.

The suspect, identified as Brendan Nugent, was apprehended at the scene with the help of bystanders. Nugent has been charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, intentionally causing grievous bodily harm, and a federal offense related to assaulting a Commonwealth public official. He is scheduled to appear in Wangaratta Magistrates Court. Nugent's father, Rod Nugent, and his partner, Christine Cunningham, stated they have known Haines for over two decades and are family friends, pledging full cooperation with the police.

The attack has drawn attention due to political posts attributed to an account linked to Nugent. ABC News investigations uncovered messages on social media criticizing Israel's actions in Gaza, advocating for Palestinian fundraising, and expressing opposition to the Australian government's support for Israel. One post reportedly targeted Haines and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, calling them "US lackeys" for not preventing Israeli actions in Gaza.

Haines herself has publicly advocated for a sustained ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid, and sanctions against Israel. However, authorities have not yet established a link between her political stances and the attack. Reports indicate Nugent was known to police and underwent a mental health assessment while in custody.
