Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary warned that European airfares are set to rise by the largest margin in history due to the Middle East conflict increasing oil prices. He predicts ticket prices could jump up to 20% in the next year, with jet fuel costs already 50% higher than pre-war levels. Low-cost carriers like Ryanair may be particularly affected, facing difficult choices between price hikes, reduced flights, or lower profits.

  • Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary predicts historic airfare increases in Europe within the next year.
  • The Middle East conflict is driving up oil prices, forcing airlines to raise ticket costs.
  • Ticket prices could increase by up to 20% in the coming year, according to O'Leary.
  • Jet fuel costs are currently 50% higher than before the conflict began.
  • Low-cost airlines may face significant challenges balancing low fares with rising operational expenses.

Michael O'Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, issued a stark warning in Brussels, predicting the most significant increase in European airfare prices in history over the next year. He attributes this surge primarily to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has driven up oil prices and is forcing airlines to pass these increased operational costs onto consumers.

O'Leary anticipates that ticket prices could rise by as much as 20% in the coming year. This forecast echoes earlier statements he made in early October, where he cautioned that European airlines might face higher fuel costs and ticket prices due to the prolonged war with Iran. He specifically noted that jet fuel prices are currently about 50% higher than before the conflict began and are likely to remain at these elevated levels for the next 12 to 18 months.

This is not the first time O'Leary has sounded alarms regarding potential disruptions. In April, he warned Sky News about the risk of supply disruptions in Europe during May and June if the war continued, estimating that 10% to 25% of the company's fuel supply could be at risk during that period.

While all airlines are expected to be impacted by rising fuel costs, low-cost carriers like Ryanair, which built their business model on offering exceptionally low fares, may face the most complex challenges. These airlines will likely have to choose between raising prices, reducing flight schedules, or absorbing a significant hit to their profitability.
