Wholesale prices in Palestine experienced a significant increase of 16.39% during the third quarter of the current year compared to the second quarter, according to data from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. Imported goods saw a substantial rise of 20.17%, while domestically produced and consumed goods increased by 7.03%. The wholesale and retail trade and vehicle repair sector recorded a sharp 63.40% price hike, though this sector constitutes about 11% of wholesale trade. Within this, the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles rose by 30.95%. Wholesale trade excluding vehicles, which makes up approximately 89% of the total, saw a 10.34% price increase.
Among the most affected categories, grains and seeds topped the list with a 48.19% increase, followed by lubricating oils and greases at 25.44%, iron tools at 24.73%, and home furnishings at 12.41%. Prices for fruits and vegetables climbed 5.14%, liquid fuels by 4.23%, and pharmaceutical and medical preparations by 1.52%. Conversely, wholesale prices for solid fuels dropped by 22.12%, fish, meat, and their products by 7.16%, and live animals by 6.79%.
This rise in wholesale prices could lead to increased purchasing costs for traders, potentially impacting consumer prices later. However, the wholesale price index increase does not automatically translate to a proportional rise in retail prices, as final consumer costs are also influenced by transportation, storage, profit margins, and demand levels.
