Summer Fruit and Vegetable Prices Drop Sharply Amid High Supply and Market Competition

A recent investigation into the current market for fruits and vegetables in Israel reveals a significant price drop, mainly driven by intense competition among food retail chains. This summer, agricultural yields have been exceptionally high, resulting in an abundant supply that directly lowers prices. Unlike last year, when security issues damaged farmland and caused shortages, this year’s harvest meets or exceeds demand, leading to much cheaper produce.

For example, watermelon prices have fallen to as low as 1.90 shekels per kilogram in several chains, zucchini costs 2.90 shekels per kilogram at Rami Levi, red cabbage is priced at 3.90 shekels, and Victory supermarket offers a bag of carrots for just one shekel. Melons are also available for 1.90 shekels. A price comparison conducted via the Prices website crowned Rami Levi as the cheapest supermarket chain, with a fruit and vegetable basket costing 562.02 shekels, significantly lower than Victory’s 721.42 shekels basket, a 28% difference.

Experts attribute the low prices to several factors: fertile farmland, increased labor availability due to foreign workers, and a low dollar exchange rate that reduces the cost of imported produce. Additionally, the recent security situation has led more Israelis to stay home during these months, increasing demand for fruits and vegetables. Despite this heightened demand, the ample supply and competitive retail environment have resulted in notable price reductions. Consumers are encouraged to compare prices to find the best deals on their summer produce baskets.
