The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Saturday evening that they have waived forward Jeremy Sochan, just four days before the start of their new NBA season. Sochan, who won a championship with the New York Knicks last season, will not be playing alongside Deni Avdija.
Following Sochan's departure, the Trail Blazers now have 14 players on their roster, plus three on two-way contracts, leaving room for one more player signing. Sochan, 23, stands at 2.03 meters tall and was the ninth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft by San Antonio. He was also named to the 2023 All-Rookie Second Team, but has since struggled to establish himself in the league.
During his time with the Knicks, Sochan appeared in 24 games, averaging approximately 2.5 points per game. Portland has now decided not to retain his services. Media in Oregon reacted to the team's decision, calling it "interesting and quite surprising." They noted that Sochan played well in preseason minutes and questioned whether general manager Joe Cronin plans to sign another player.
Earlier on Saturday, Sochan scored 6 points on 2-of-2 shooting from three-point range in 12 minutes during the Trail Blazers' 128-118 loss to the Golden State Warriors.
