A U.S. etiquette expert has identified ten common mistakes passengers make on airplanes that can turn a flight into a nightmare for others. Diane Gottsman, speaking to the TODAY program and reported by Israel Hayom, highlighted that even experienced travelers often unknowingly irritate their neighbors.

Among the top offenses are overfilling overhead bins, leaving personal items that could be stowed under a seat, and touching others' luggage without permission. Gottsman advises passengers to ask flight attendants for help if space is limited rather than rearranging other people's belongings.

Personal hygiene and comfort also present issues. The expert discourages removing shoes and walking barefoot, especially when using the lavatory, citing hygiene concerns. She also advises against engaging in loud conversations or playing music and videos without headphones, as these actions can be disruptive.

Gottsman also addressed personal space violations, such as extending legs into a neighbor's area or constantly touching others. She noted the unwritten rule of the middle seat passenger getting both armrests due to the inherent advantages of window and aisle seats, but stressed avoiding conflict over this.

Other behaviors to avoid include rushing to exit the plane immediately after landing, demanding to switch seats without considering the other passenger's preference or prior payment, and performing personal grooming like nail clipping or hair brushing in the cabin. Parents are urged to manage their children's behavior, preventing them from kicking seats or causing excessive noise, while also asking for patience from fellow travelers.

Finally, Gottsman emphasized that blocking aisles and delaying boarding or deplaning by lingering or searching for items disrupts the flow for everyone. She concluded that most of these issues can be avoided by remembering that the airplane cabin is a shared space and by showing basic respect for fellow passengers to ensure a more comfortable journey for all.
